Abkhazia Switches to Russia’s Dialing Code

The FINANCIAL -- According to Civil Georgia, Breakaway Abkhazia switched from Georgia’s international dialing code to Russia’s +7 on November 15.

Russia’s dialing code applies to both fixed (840) and cellular (940) operators. Georgia’s +995 code will remain active in Abkhazia till January, 2010.

 

The move comes after Russia signed cooperation memorandum with Sokhumi in the field of communication in September, 2009.

 

The Georgian Foreign Ministry said following signing of that agreement on September 30 that Russia’s decision to share its dialing code with breakaway Abkhazia contravened international.

Civil.Ge -- Sokhumi spares no effort to affirm that there is no reason to make Abkhazia an "outcast from the European community," Sergey Shamba, the breakaway region's PM, said on March 12, according to the Abkhaz news agency, Apsnipress.
